Identity, status and rank
Status, faction and rank are 3 numbered slots on your character that the server prints as words.
You set your own status, and staff set faction and rank. All 3 are stored as plain numbers and only turn into names when the server prints them.
What it does
Each of the 3 fields holds a whole number from 0 to 8. The server reads the matching label out of its own configuration whenever it needs to print one. The same number therefore reads as different words on different servers.
Rank is the only one of the three that changes anything mechanical. Doors and spawn points can be restricted to it.
Setting your status
Status is yours to change. Set it from the dropdown on the Character, then Current screen, or from the console:
The server refuses anything outside the range:
Set it to 0 to clear it. status is in the field list /character set prints when it does not
recognise a name, alongside the other character details.
Status labels will render as the servers chosen words in the menu screen, so it is easier to see what you're setting your status to when done through the menu.
Faction and rank
You cannot set either on yourself. A clerical admin sets them with /comadmin faction and
/comadmin rank. Both take a number from 1 to 8, and 0 clears the field. If you are online at the
time, you see the change:
Read both back on your own character with /character info. These are the relevant lines of its
longer listing:
Other people read your faction and rank with /inspect. That part of what it prints needs the Diplomacy skill. See
FYI and POI.
What rank unlocks
Rank 1 is the highest standing, not the lowest. A door locked to rank 3 admits ranks 1, 2 and 3. It turns away ranks 4 to 8, and anybody unranked.
Rank-restricted spawn points work the other way. They match exactly, so a spawn point placed at rank 2 takes rank 2 characters and nobody else, including rank 1.
Rank comes from the character you have active. Log out, or play with no character selected, and you count as unranked.
Listed name and loadout
2 more staff-managed fields sit next to these.
Listed name
This is the stable name. StoryForce seeds it from the name you typed at
creation, minus any colour codes, and normal play never changes it. Renaming yourself with /name
leaves it alone. Only /comadmin listedname corrects it.
Loadout
This is a comma-separated list of items granted on top of your normal spawn kit, every time you
spawn. A clerical admin sets it with /comadmin loadout:
Accepted weapon tokens are saber, pistol, blaster, sniper, disruptor, bowcaster,
repeater, demp2, flechette, rocket, thermal, tripmine, detpack, concussion and
stunbaton. Accepted item tokens are bacta, medpac, bactabig, shield, seeker, sentry,
jetpack, cloak, binoculars and eweb.
Both fields show in the same /character info listing:
Things to note
- The labels come from the server, not from StoryForce. An operator fills in 8 slots for each field, so rank 3 can be anything.
- An unfilled slot reads as
-. Setting yourself to a status the operator never named leaves you showing a dash. - Rank 1 beats rank 8. Ranks count downwards in seniority, so it is easy to get backwards.
- A lock set with no rank requirement ignores rank completely. Use this when you do not want the door to be opened at all.
- A loadout weapon is not a licence to fire it. Weapon skill gates still apply, so a disruptor in your hands still needs Speciality Weapons.
