Creating a character
A character is a saved person you play.
You must be logged in, and your account must be a guest or a full member. Former members and disabled accounts cannot create characters at all.
Creating one in the wizard
The wizard fills in more fields than the console command does.
- Press ESC to open the menu bar.
- Select Character, then Manage.
- Select CREATE NEW CHARACTER.
- Work through the wizard and confirm.
The wizard asks for an id, a full name, pronouns, species, homeworld, scale, hearing, a second language and whether the character is aquatic.
Creating one from the console
char is an accepted alias for character. Both the id and the name are required, and the name is
everything you type after the id, so it can contain spaces.
A character made this way gets defaults for everything the wizard would have asked. That means scale 100, hearing 3, and basic as the only language. Species, homeworld and pronouns come out blank. Fill those in later with character details once a member.
Ids and names
These are 2 different things and are not interchangeable.
The id is the handle the server files the character under. It is 1 to 20 characters and accepts
letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores. It must be unique across the entire server, not only your
account:
The name is what everyone else sees above your head and in chat. It can contain spaces. The
console command keeps colour codes in the name. The wizard refuses them. The console command
refuses a quote mark, and the wizard removes it:
Creation also stores a colour-stripped copy of the name as the listed name, which is the fallback name for the character slot.. See identity, status and rank.
How many you get
Your membership level sets the cap.
| Membership | Characters | Can create |
|---|---|---|
| Guest | 1 | yes |
| Member | server setting, 10 by default | yes |
| Former member | none | no |
| Disabled | none | no |
A guest who tries for a second character gets a specific refusal:
A full member who has run out of slots gets a count instead:
The server stops former members and disabled accounts before either check runs:
Things to note
- Character ids are globally unique. If anybody on the server has ever used
rhenvaal, you need a different id, even though your display name can be whatever you like. - 20 ids are reserved. Every word
/characteritself understands, such ascreate, list, selectanddelete, is refused as an id, whatever its length. - The member cap is a server setting. It can be anything from 1 to 30, so 10 is only the default.
- The wizard allows 2 languages at most, counting basic. It refuses
binaryoutright because that needs the Tech skill first. - Language names are letters only. The wizard lowercases what you type, then refuses any name that is not letters from a to z.
- Guests get a full identity out of the wizard. Afterwards they can only change their name and model.
- The console command sets no identity fields at all. Species, homeworld and pronouns come out blank and have to be set later.
Next
- Switching and managing: Set a default and swap between your characters.
- Character details: Fill in species, homeworld and pronouns after a console create.
