Talk to an AI character
An AI character is an ordinary NPC a director has handed to an outside service.
Speak directly to one and the game server sends your character's name and your exact words over the internet to Anthropic's API.
A public line spoken near one may leave in a later request.
What leaves the server when you speak
One request carries:
- your character's name and the exact words you typed
- up to 12 earlier turns of that NPC's conversation, including other players' names and the public lines it overheard from them.
- the scene text the director set, and the character description they wrote
- whatever that character has already stored about you by name
Where the director has saved a writable persona, automatic memory can make a second paid request after 6 exchanges, 3 minutes idle or a partner change.
Talk to an AI character
Stay within 400 units (by default). Address one in any of 3 ways:
/talk <npc> <message>, where the name is any part of the display name- aim at it and type an ordinary public line
- open an ordinary public line with its name
/talk Liplin Have you seen a Rodian come through here?
The reply is scheduled 4 seconds after you spoke and capped at 130 characters, heard by everyone as ordinary NPC chat.
Being overheard
An unaddressed public line within 300 units is held in each nearby cast NPC's recent context, up to 3 lines per NPC. That does not call the outside service by itself. It can leave later with a direct reply or memory request.
Only plain public chat is overheard. Whispers, shouts, out-of-character lines, /me actions,
comlinks, tells, director notes and chat personas are not.
Spot an AI character
An asterisk is added to a cast NPC's name, visible only on the crosshair while aimed at it.
Asking it does not help. The shipped instructions tell the character to deflect in character.
When nothing happens
While the server waits for a reply, a chat balloon shows over the NPC.
Your line is dropped silently when the NPC is not cast, is already thinking, the outside connection is unavailable, you are out of range, inside the 3-second cooldown, or the request budget is spent.
