Speak in character
Saying a line
Open the chat line with your chat key, type, and press Enter. No prefix, no command.
Your line reaches the room as your character's name, a colon, then your words in green.
The gesture your character plays
The body gesture lasts longer for a longer spoken line, up to 10 seconds. Face movement lasts 1.6 seconds.
Turn the gesture and the face movement off separately on change how chat looks and reaches you.
Describing what your character does
Write /me in the third person, with a space after it. StoryForce puts your character's name in
front.
Verse Grenko types /me straightens his collar, and the room reads
Verse Grenko straightens his collar in white rather than the green of speech.
sf_emotesyntax is the server-side cvar that tells StoryForce what syntax to use for emotes and helps it parse emotes for use in language or emote only messages.
The shipped server config uses a bare colour code ^7. A character pair such as || or :: wraps both ends instead.
The same decoration works inside a spoken line, so an action can sit mid-sentence.
That is what keeps it readable when the rest of the line is in a language the reader does not know. Speak another language covers that half.
Who hears you
Ordinary speech and actions go to every player.
Speech holds full strength to 370 game units at Normal hearing. It fades to 10% by 900 units and stays there.
The console carries the whole line at any distance.
A bubble sits over your head from the moment you open the chat line. Change how chat looks and reaches you owns the bubble and the chat fade settings.
Things to note
- Most commands do not work on the chat line.
sf_blockslashchatdecides whether a slash line typed into chat is swallowed with a notice or broadcast the way the base game does. - The chat line blocks
/loginand/account. - Chat protection depends on the server settings.
sf_chatprotectionRefuses combat damage while the chat line is open.
Prefer the console?
The chat line sends exactly this, without the /say in front.
