Wear gear, a comlink and a hologram

Switch the breather and translator on

ESC → Character → Current → GEAR

Select the checkbox on the Breather: or Translator: row:

  • Breather lets your character breathe underwater
  • Translator understands any language spoken to you, and wears a device on the head

Both switch off when you log out.

The 4 numbered boxes on Bolts: are cosmetic attachment slots, covered in attach models, effects and sounds.

Hold a glowrod

Select the checkbox on the Glowrod: row. It puts a glowrod in your left hand and casts a warm yellow light. Select it again to switch both off.

Change the gear models and placement

Select the Breather: or Translator: label rather than its checkbox. One editor holds both devices.

Enter a value, then select the SET beside that field. Each device takes the same 3:

  • Model is a path under models/map_objects, such as StoryForce/breather
  • Offset is bone,x,y,z,pitch, yaw, roll, with no spaces
  • Scale is a percentage, 10 to 400

Enter default and select SET to put one field back, or RESET on a section heading for the whole device.

Use the attachment editor to get these values easily.

Select the Comlink: row.

  • On delivers messages.
  • Off Out of range and No response each hand the sender a different reason it did not arrive. The state is saved on the character.

Tech 3 adds a Scanner: row under INTERCEPT. See listen in on comlink traffic.

Interception needs your comlink and both callers' comlinks set to On.

Render yourself as a hologram

Select the Hologram: row, then Hologram for a steady translucent transmission or Distort for a flickering, unstable one. Off puts you back to solid.

Drag Strength under DISTORTION, 1 to 5, to tune the flicker.

Skins with complicated multi-stage shaders especially those that rely on transparency may not render faithfully.

Things to note

  • Aquatic characters cannot use a breather. They read Breather: Innate, with no checkbox.

Prefer the console?

/breather, /translator, /glowrod and /hologram toggle when run bare, so one bind flips each one.

/translator [on|off] takes the same form.

Bare /comlink reports the current state. Give it a state to change it:

The GEAR editor's fields are all /character set on your active character.

The fields are breather and translator, each with an offset and a scale form, so breatherscale. default resets any of them.
