Place a sound
In the menus: ESC → Design → Sounds
Find a sound
Browse the sound tree, or type into Find and select SEARCH to sweep every folder, pk3 archives included.
Selecting a file fills Path and auditions it at once, so you can work through a folder by ear.
Path is editable, so you can type a sample you already know.
In Use lists sounds registered on this map, including placed sounds. It sits beside Favourites and Current.
Place it in the world
Select PLACE IN WORLD. The sample plays from the crosshair rather than in your ear, so you hear the real distance falloff from where you are standing.
MOUSE1 stamps, TAB changes what the wheel dials, and MOUSE2 comes back to the panel. Place a model teaches the mode in full.
The dials
TAB walks them in this order:
- X, Y and Z offset the sound from the point under your cursor, 8 units a notch
- Interval is how often a repeat sound re-fires, 0.5 to 60 seconds
- Mode is
loop,onceorrepeat - Grid snaps the point to 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 or 128 units, or is
off
Hold SHIFT while turning the wheel for smaller changes on numeric dials that support it. Grid snapping includes height.
Dialling Interval switches Mode to repeat. There is no orientation dial and no volume dial.
The 3 modes are different things:
loopis an engine loop with no gap at the join, and it is networked, so somebody joining later hears it already runningonceplays the sample a single time and is then gonerepeatre-fires the whole sample every so often, for a clank every 5 seconds or a distant boom every 20
Things to note
- The map holds 64 sounds, and only 32 are heard at once. Spread them.
- A character voice sample cannot be looped. Anything under
sound/chars/is a streamed MP3. Useonceorrepeat, or pick a.wav. - Sound registrations last until the map changes. If Sound table is full appears, removing a placed sound does not release its path. Reuse a path already placed or registered on this map, or change map before adding a new one.
